Sermon audio – Lessons from El Paso – Rev. DL Helfer
After a wonderful visit from Steve Boisert, Director of Community Collaborations International, the core group of initial planners are energized and more have joined this trip. Here’s some of the details that we now know:
* The trip is planned for April 13-20, returning home in time for Easter (but also getting to enjoy some of the Easter preparations in Puerto Rico).
* The cost is $895 plus flight, though we’ll work to charter a group flight. All from 13 – ? are welcome. If you’re 80 and asking, does this include me? Yes! We’re also reaching out to recent bridged senior youth and local UU congregations. We are currently at 12 participants, and hoping to grow to a group of 20-30. Youth – if you want to bring friends from school, that’s welcome! All costs are covered from the time until we leave. Food (including vegetarian options), boarding, transport.
* The work is varied. There’s opportunity to work with and learn from youth at the Boys and Girls Club, work in native plant restoration, helping structures damaged by Hurricane Maria, and much more. Specific work cannot be promised in advance, but Steve assures us that he’ll split us into teams based on skill, need, and ability. All will be able to meaningfully contribute. While the focus is work, there will be some time to enjoy gorgeous Puerto Rico beaches, see Old San Juan, and maybe one or two other points of cultural importance.
* It won’t be extremely hot and humid yet, likely. Steve says April is typically mid-80s and breezy.
